What is the ARA?

The Anti-Racism Awareness (ARA) group is an independent student group that categorically strives for racial justice and social equity. As a group, we aim to embed anti-racism at Radboud University through a series of public events, campaigns and educational social media interaction. Although our main focus is on race as an equity imperative, the work we carry out also includes the interests of other groups and individuals who have experienced marginalization and discrimination. ARA aims to facilitate a safe space for marginalized students where they can share these experiences and build strong and supportive networks. Yet, ARA is also home for students who want to become active allies and educate themselves on the structural inequities that still affect our society and education system today. Through ARA we seek to make culturally sustainable changes and build an inclusive campus community where we can all thrive!

Our goals and mission

ARA is dedicated to advancing racial justice and social equity within academic communities in Nijmegen, such as the HAN and the Radboud University. Our main objectives therefore are:

  • Embedding anti-racism: We aim to integrate anti-racism principles into the core values and practices of academic institutions in Nijmegen. This involves organizing a series of events, campaigns, and using social media platforms for educational outreach.

  • Striving for inclusivity beyond race: While our primary focus is racial equity, we also try to address the concerns of other marginalized groups who have experienced discrimination and marginalization.
  • Providing safe spaces: ARA is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for marginalized students. This commitment extends beyond the physical realm, encompassing both a designated space on campus and a warm, welcoming community within ARA itself!
  • Promoting active allyship: ARA welcomes students who wish to become active allies in the fight against systemic inequities.
  • Fostering culturally sustainable changes: Through ARA, we try to bring about long-lasting, culturally-sensitive changes within the university. One of our goals, therefore, is to create an environment where diversity and inclusivity thrive.

  • Building an inclusive (campus) community: ARA's ultimate mission is to contribute to the development of an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming campus community. We envision a space where all individuals, regardless of racial and cultural background, can thrive.
